Nature of Work:
The Mechanic provides the mechanical expertise to make sure that all farm equipment and vehicles are in good, safe working order. The work requires independent judgment regarding method of repair. Incumbent functions as a lead worker for inmate mechanic helpers and provides support as a worker for various farm activities. May assist with vehicle or other equipment repairs at other WVDA locations as needed.

Examples of Work:
  • Perform skilled mechanical repair work in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of all farm equipment and vehicles.
  • Maintenance of equipment in safe and repaired condition.
  • Fill in for farm workers to transport cattle to the slaughterhouse, etc. as needed.
  • Routine operation of farm machinery, including, but not limited to, tractors, skid steers, mowers, and balers.
  • Keep maintenance records on all equipment repaired.
  • Load and unload supplies from vendors.
  • Purchase and ordering of parts, and supplies following the correct purchasing procedures.
  • Assist with general farm duties: (planting, harvesting, etc.) as directed.
  • Communicate with immediate supervisor daily to discuss current equipment status, farm activities, problems, etc.
  • Notify supervision immediately of equipment that is unsafe to operate.
  • Oversee inmates assigned to assist the mechanic in keeping the machinery in good working order or assigned to farm tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
Standing, sitting, driving, walking, lifting up to 100 lbs., operating and working in proximity of proximity of operating machinery, outside work and exposure to inclement weather. Occasional overnight travel may be required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair (including body repair) of vehicles and other equipment.
  • Knowledge of the operation of a motor driven piece of equipment.
  • Knowledge of state motor vehicle license laws and regulations.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license.
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment used in the upkeep of motor driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of defensive driving.
  • Ability to perform routine maintenance and repair of assigned vehicle.
  • Ability to maintain simple vehicle and/or stock records.
  • Ability to work with livestock.
  • Ability to work with welding equipment (including torches) and other shop equipment.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
  • Ability to operate farm machinery: tractors, plows, discs, combines, etc.
  • Ability to oversee the work of others.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma; vocation training in mechanics preferred.
Experience: One year of full-time or paid experience in mechanics preferred.

Additional Requirements:
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records.
  • Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and the State of West Virginia.
