Nature of Work:
The Statistician Assistant serves as a technical support assistant for the Agricultural Statistics program to perform statistical, technical, and clerical work in conjunction with pre-survey, survey, and post-survey activities conducted by the office for analyzing data on the main agricultural commodities in West Virginia.

Examples of Work:
  • Prepare reports for press releases weekly, monthly, and annually in accordance with National
  • Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) release date guidelines and restrictions.
  • Prepare survey materials, including printing questionnaires, preparing assignment lists, and develop address labels using database software.
  • Create and update publications.
  • Maintain shipping supplies.
  • Maintain complex filing system.
  • May attend various functions including Small Farm Conference, Ag Day, State Fair, and Farm Bureau events.
  • Coordinate statistical-clerical operations with supervisors to accomplish support work.
  • Create office calendar documenting workflow and all associated activities.
  • Recommend new or improved methods and techniques for assembly, computation, and summarization of data and preparation of reports.
  • Assist with other WVDA divisions as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions:
Combination of outdoor and office environments including sitting, standing, walking, driving, lifting up to 25 pounds. May include proximity to farm animals and exposure to various weather conditions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • General knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and objectives of the West Virginia Department of Agriculture and NASS and ability to interpret these as required.
  • Knowledge of modern office procedures, practices, equipment, and business procedures.
  • Knowledge of computers and software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook, Access), and Adobe (Acrobat, Dreamweaver, InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop), SAP, Citrix, limited SQL.
  • Excellent grammar and spelling skills.
  • Excellent typing skills.
  • Ability to plan, schedule, and organize to meet extremely tight deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain detailed records according to prescribed format.
  • Ability to retrieve and utilize information from multiple sources to complete assignments and present information in a concise and communicative manner.
  • Ability to build simple and effective databases.
  • Strong ability to deal with the public in an effective and courteous manner and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, associates, other organizations, and the general public.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to work around livestock and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to work independently or with a group.
  • Knowledge of livestock and farming practices.
  • Seasoned ability to prepare and provide presentations for small and large groups using Power Point and/or other presentation tools and methods.
  • Strong trainer skills as process documenter, trainer, and metric leader.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in a relevant field.
Experience: Three years of full-time paid employment performing progressively complex office work.

Additional Requirements:
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records.
  • Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and the State of West Virginia.
