Job Title:              Mechanic - TEMPORARY (Maximum of 1,000 hours/calendar year)

Nature of Work:
This position provides the mechanical expertise to ensure that all farm equipment and vehicles are in safe, efficient working order. Incumbent functions as a lead worker for inmate mechanic helpers.

Examples of Work:
  • Perform skilled mechanical repair work in the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of all farm equipment and vehicles.
  • Exercise independent judgment regarding method of repair used for the equipment.
  • Maintain equipment in safe, efficient, repaired condition.
  • Fill in for farm workers to transport cattle to the slaughter house, etc. as needed.
  • Maintain up to date records on all equipment repairs.
  • Load and unload supplies from vendors.
  • Purchase and order parts and supplies as needed following the correct purchasing procedures.
  • Assist with general farm duties: (planting, harvesting, etc.) as directed.
  • Communicate with immediate supervisor daily to discuss current farm activities, problems, etc.
  • Notify supervision immediately of equipment that is unsafe to operate.
  • Supervise inmates assigned to assist the mechanic in keeping the machinery in good working order.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Working Conditions:
  • Standing, sitting, driving, walking, lifting up to 100 lbs., operating and working in proximity of operating machinery, outside work and exposure to inclement weather.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • General knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and objectives of the West Virginia Department of Agriculture.
  • Seasoned knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and other equipment.
  • Ability and skill to legally drive a motor vehicle between four and eight tons GVW.
  • Knowledge of the operation of a motor driven piece of equipment.
  • Knowledge of state motor vehicle license laws and regulations.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Skilled in the use of tools and equipment used in the upkeep of motor driven equipment.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of defensive driving.
  • Experienced ability to perform routine maintenance and repair of motor vehicles.
  • Ability to maintain vehicle and/or stock records.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skillful ability to diagnose mechanical problems and determine appropriate procedures for repairs.
  • Skillful ability to operate farm machinery: tractors, plows, discs, combines, etc.
  • Experienced ability to delegate work to others.
Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Completion of vocational training in mechanics.
Experience: Two years of full-time, paid experience in mechanics.

Additional Requirements:
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records.
  • Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and the State of West Virginia.
