Job Title   :           Custodian Supervisor 
Division:               Administrative Services
Headquarters  :  Guthrie Agricultural Center, Charleston WV
FLSA Status:        Exempt

Nature of Work: Under limited direction, this position plans, organizes, and supervises the work of the custodial staff.

Examples of Work:
  • Plan, schedule, and supervise the work of the custodial staff to properly maintain the Guthrie complex.
  • Devise and implement plans to improve efficiency and effectiveness of custodial staff.
  • Review and approve employees’ timecards and leave requests.
  • Oversee employee duties orientation and training; coach and develop employees.
  • Assess employee performance according to established standards and expectations.
  • Participate in the selection of new employees; make recommendations for salary increases.
  • Respond to staff complaints/issues as necessary; initiate disciplinary action as needed.
  • Monitor and maintain adequate supplies for building operations; reorder as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of mandatory requirements or statewide contracts, and other sources to procure supplies in the most cost-effective manner; submit order to management to be purchased.
  • Sanitize facilities using electrostatic equipment to disinfect surfaces; collect trash.
  • Participate in various custodial duties such as: sweep and mop floors; vacuum and clean minor carpet soils; clean away cobwebs or pests from stairwells, as necessary.
  • Clear walkways of snow, grass clippings, leaves or other debris using a leaf blower or other equipment as appropriate.
  • Schedule and monitor infrequent, larger scale after-hours repairs or projects such as: deep clean carpets; strip old wax from floors, apply new wax and buff; clean windows inside and outside, etc. as needed.
  • Coordinate with other maintenance personnel to maintain facilities by notifying Assistant Director of problems identified during the shift such as: leaky faucets or lights that need to be replaced.
  • Ensure cottages are properly cleaned when vacated before the next tenant moves in.
  • Use tractor to load salt truck; operate snowplow to clear the Guthrie complex and the roadway leading up to the complex.
  • Reconnect the disconnect on the transformer in response to an emergency power outage during the evening shift.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions: Sit, stand, walk for extended periods, lift up to 50 pounds and carry up to 20 pounds for extended periods, drive, exposure to inclement weather. May be required to work irregular hours if business need arises in unusual circumstances and/or be on-call to respond for emergencies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of proper use and maintenance of industrial cleaning and disinfecting equipment and appliances.
  • Knowledge of proper use of industrial cleaning and disinfecting supplies.
  • Knowledge of proper procedures for waste disposal.
  • Knowledge of landscaping and handyman practices.
  • Ability to effectively plan work assignments and supervise subordinates.
  • Ability to stand/walk for long periods of time while carrying 20 pounds; lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb or kneel as necessary to complete assignment.
  • Ability to operate various types of machinery required to complete duties.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer and its applications for word processing, spreadsheets, and timekeeping.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with staff, peers, management, and the public.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Three years of full-time experience as a custodian; one year of supervisory experience preferred.

Additional Requirements:
Valid driver’s license is required.
Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.
Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including fingerprinting and DMV records.
Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and the State of West Virginia.
