Nature of Work:
This position will perform advanced level work independently overseeing museum operations, events and personnel, as well as maintenance and construction when needed. Incumbent will report to the Board of Directors and the Commissioner of Agriculture.

Examples of Work:
  • Responsible for overall daily operation of the Farm Museum.
  • Maintain records and compile reports as requested.
  • Responsible for training, directing and supervising personnel (clerical, laborers, volunteers).
  • Responsible for general maintenance and oversight of facility.
  • Participate in other activities as directed by Board of Directors or requested by the Commissioner or his designee.
  • Coordinate and plan special events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:
Office and outdoor working environment; sitting, standing, walking, driving, bend, squat, crawl, climb, kneel, reach above shoulder level, and lift up to 50 pounds. Potential exposure to inclement weather such as extreme heat, cold, rain and snow.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Advanced knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment used in maintenance, mechanics and grounds keeping.
  • Advanced knowledge of occupational hazards and related safety procedures related to farm equipment.
  • Strong math skills and attention to detail.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office software particularly Outlook, Excel and Word.
  • Ability to safely operate tools and equipment used in routine building maintenance and on-site construction projects.
  • Ability to work extended hours including weekends and holidays.
  • Advanced ability to perform routine carpentry, plumbing, electrical and masonry work.
  • Advanced ability to determine and order materials needed for specific tasks.
  • Advanced ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Seasoned ability to deal effectively with complaints, employers, community groups, the general public, volunteers, Farm Museum staff and Farm Museum Board of Directors.
  • Professional public speaking skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
  • Excellent ability to coordinate multiple festivals and events.
  • Seasoned ability to perform multiple tasks and projects under deadlines.
  • Must demonstrate a high degree of initiative and be able to make sound decisions on all routine matters.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, business management, or a related science preferred.
Experience: Three years of supervisory experience in agriculture, business management, or related fields preferred.

Additional Requirements:
  • Valid driver’s license is required.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records.
  • Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and the State of West Virginia.
