Job Title: Human Resources Intern

Division: Administrative Services

Headquarters: Guthrie Agricultural Center, Charleston, WV

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hourly Rate: $10.00 - $12.00 per Hour (Commensurate with Skills)

 

Nature of Work: Under administrative direction, at the training level, learns to perform human resources duties. Work requires analysis and interpretation of job related information to develop and compose written documentation in the form of a job description.

Examples of Work:

  • Learns to interview job incumbents and supervisory personnel to gather job related information.
  • Learns to evaluate job information gathered to filter and reduce to an accurate description of the current job duties.
  • Learns to evaluate data gathered to determine an appropriate level of education and work experience required to perform the duties of the position.
  • Learns to review proposed human resources actions for conformity to department policies and internal equity considerations.
  • Learns to answer questions from job incumbents and supervisory personnel related to the job description.
  • Learns to draft descriptions, review with collaborators and obtain signatures for final approval.
  • Learns to inform potential applicants of job requirements and advises of appropriate course(s) of action.
  • Learns applicable policies, procedures, laws, rules and regulations.
  • Learns to draft and interpret uniform policies and operational procedures to ensure consistent and equitable treatment of employees.
  • May compose correspondence, job announcements, forms and work reports.
  • May participate in formal and informal training to develop the knowledge and abilities required to complete assigned tasks.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:
Sitting, standing, driving and/or walking, using a computer and other office equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • General knowledge of human resources theories, practices and operations.
  • General knowledge of federal and state legislative processes.
  • Skill in gathering and compiling information.
  • Skill in drafting, reviewing and revising as necessary to develop a finished product.
  • Skill in using computers and software including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) to retrieve and utilize information and resources to complete assignments.
  • Skill in attention to detail to present information in a prescribed format.
  • Ability to learn the organization and specific functions of the Department of Agriculture and the relationship with other state agencies.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to learn and apply applicable policies, procedures, laws, rules and regulations to assignments.
  • Ability to develop courteous, professional relationships to work collaboratively with others.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. Strong writing skills required. Pursuing higher education in a relevant area preferred.
Experience: Some work experience in any area preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing.
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records.
Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and the State of West Virginia.
