Job Title: Laboratory/Data Entry Assistant – Summer Intern

Division: Animal Health

Headquarters: Moorefield Agriculture Center, Moorefield, WV

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hourly Wage: $9.00

Closing Date: Open until filled

Temporary position to work during the summer months and during holiday breaks as needed.

Nature of Work: Under direct supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor, this position performs routine lab work by conducting a limited number of basic laboratory tasks and examinations and performs data entry using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).

Examples of Work:

  • Assists with receiving samples; logs samples into LIMS; and uniquely identifies, labels, and prepares samples for testing, distributing and mailing laboratory reports.
  • Assists with cleaning and sterilizing laboratory glassware and equipment.
  • Assists with registering and preparing samples for analysis.
  • Assists with sterilizing and discarding infectious and disposable waste materials according to Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations.
  • Assists with preparing media and reagents.
  • Assists with maintaining adequate supplies used within the work area.
  • Assists with maintaining required records.
  • Assists with performing routine laboratory procedures.
  • Assists with developing and maintaining quality assurance measures to assure that analytical methods are under control.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal laboratory/office environment; standing, sitting, walking, lifting, operating a computer and other lab and office equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to multitask.
  • Ability to learn basic laboratory terminology, techniques and practices.
  • Ability to learn the federal requirements regarding proper disposal of laboratory waste materials.
  • Ability to comprehend oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to prepare boxes and letters for mailing.
  • Working knowledge of computers/data entry.
  • Skilled in the performance of routine microbiological testing and interpretation.
  • Skilled with techniques and in following standard scientific laboratory methods.
  • Ability to work independently and be self-motivated.

Qualifications:

Education:

· High school diploma or equivalent. College students with Agricultural Science courses preferred.

Experience:

· One year of experience in a laboratory environment preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  • Valid driver’s license
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment drug testing
  • Satisfactory completion of pre-employment law enforcement background investigation, including DMV records
  • Must maintain a positive image of the Commissioner, West Virginia Department of Agriculture, and the State of West Virginia.
